Message from the Head
Welcome to the Department of Earthquake Engineering, IIT Roorkee. The department is deeply engaged in both teaching and advanced research dedicated to understanding earthquake hazards and mitigating associated risks. Our academic programs are structured to provide a strong foundation in theoretical concepts as well as practical, field-oriented knowledge, preparing students for cutting-edge research and for addressing real-world challenges in earthquake risk reduction and structural safety. Students across all programs undertake year-long projects or dissertations, and many pursue internships in industry, government agencies, and prestigious national and international institutes to gain exposure to contemporary research, seismic design practices, and emerging technologies. The department also offers several computational and simulation-based courses to equip students with essential modelling and analysis skills.
Postgraduate students have opportunities to work in state-of-the-art laboratories and research facilities as part of their project or dissertation work. Our faculty members are actively involved in high-impact research spanning areas such as Seismology, Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering, Structural Dynamics, Performance-Based Design, Disaster Mitigation and Risk Assessment, and Lifeline Earthquake Engineering.
Explore the Department website to learn more about our academic programs, research initiatives, and achievements.

Prof. B.K. Maheshwari
Head, Department of Earthquake Engineering
Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, Roorkee-INDIA
About the Department
The Department of Earthquake Engineering, formerly known as School for Research and Training in Earthquake Engineering (SRTEE) was established at University of Roorkee (Now Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee) in 1960, which has now completed 65 years of excellence in the service of nation. This department happens to be the only one of its kind in the country till date that deals with earthquake engineering problems and challenges.
It is fully interdisciplinary since its existence, bringing together structural and soil engineers, geologist and seismologist working as a team under one roof. The Department is engaged in teaching at Post Graduate level and conducting basic and applied research proceeding upto Ph.D. programmes along with developing Indian Standards and also training of field engineers in various aspects of earthquake engineering. Moreover, the Department of Earthquake Engineering is actively involved in carrying out sponsored research and consultancy projects through self-guiding state-of-art test facilities having capability to convert research on paper into technology for field implementation.
